Our schedules are busier than ever, and after a day of multitasking, you might find yourself feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Just as there are several causes for anxiety, there are several ways to manage it. While many are just beginning to discover the benefits of essential oils, the practice is anything but new.
Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years, and even today’s scientists continue to study the benefits. Extracted from plants, essential oils can be used in a number of ways, but the goal is to inhale the calming scent. Looking for ways to manage anxiety? Some essential oils are known for their calming effect, but you’ll probably need to experiment a little to find the blend that is right for you.
Lavender
Lavender (lavandula angustifolia) is popular for its soothing qualities, which is why it’s found in so many health and wellness products today—even those designed for infants. If you’ve ever walked past a bloom of this beautiful, purple plant, you might understand why the scent can be so calming.
Used by our ancestors for centuries, the impact of lavender on the autonomic nervous system has been well-researched. At least one study showed that lavender oil can alleviate the symptoms associated with anxiety and depression, while also helping treat migraines.
Vetiver
You may not be familiar with vetiver (vetiveria zizanioides), but this essential oil is known for its antioxidant properties. In fact, vetiver may help fight free radicals and rid the body of toxins and environmental pollutants. Removing these from your body could boost your overall sense of well-being.
Some evidence suggests vetiver might also improve emotional health. One study showed that when rats were given vetiver, the effect was similar to diazepam, a medication often prescribed for anxiety. In recent years, vetiver has even been included among ADHD and ADD treatments for both adults and children.
Bergamot
If you’ve ever had a cup of Earl Grey tea, you’re already familiar with the distinctive floral aroma and flavor of bergamot (citrus bergamia). And Star Trek: The Next Generation fans will recall this was Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s preferred drink. (Perhaps, this is why he remained so calm in stressful intergalactic battles.)
